On 27 December 2008, in the midst of its ongoing siege of the Gaza Strip, Israel launched attacks by air, land and sea against the 1.5 million Palestinians of Gaza. The attacks left more than 1,400 Palestinians killed, the majority civilians including more than 300 children. Thousands of homes and businesses were destroyed throughout Gaza. The three week assault ended with Israel’s unilateral ceasefire on 18 January. 13 Israelis were killed by Palestinians during that time, 10 were soldiers.
